Use application.getInitParameter(..) to access context-param entries in web.xml.
Use javax.naming.Context.lookup(..) to access an enterprise wide JNDI namespace.

2: Name two advantages provided by a JNDI lookup over using web.xml's context-param? Answer

context-param's are limited in scope to the web-app. JNDI entries can be enterprise wide.
JNDI can return a pooled datasource which provides (and hides) automatic connection pooling.
